The discovery of means for absolute dating in the early s was a huge advance. Geologists in the late 18th and early 19th century studied rock layers and the fossils in them to determine relative age.       The assumption that there has been no loss or gain of the isotopes in the rock assumption 2 does not take into account the impact of weathering by surface and ground waters and the diffusion of gases.
